 Algae are classified according to their colors. Brown algae are part of the division Phaeophyta, due to their carotenoid pigments. These pigments allow the algae to absorb the shorter wavelength light found at a depth of approximately 10 meters. Included in this class are Laminariales, Fucus and Ascophyllums. The large majority of nonmicroscopic algae lives in a narrow edge along the shoreline, from tidal zone depth to a depth where light can no longer penetrate. Usually they attach themselves to something solid : another algae or an attached shell, but mostly to a rocky seabed.
